Bloomberg China+

Docuseries Graphics Package

I was commissioned to create a branding and motion graphics package for Bloomberg Quicktake’s new original series on China. A visual language centered around bold colors and map-making textures was developed for the various graphic elements and animations throughout the show — including maps, infographics, title cards, lower thirds, among others. To help viewers better understand geopolitical matters and locations, satellite imagery is primarily used throughout the map animations. The deliverables included a collection of After Effects and Premiere templates that are driven by expressions so Bloomberg's in-house production team retains a comprehensive visual toolkit for future episodes.

Project Details

The Goal:

Bloomberg digital media reached out asking me to create a complete show packaging for their new docuseries about geopolitcal topics related to China. Given the crowded media landscape of explainer videos, we knew the visual look for this new show would need to stand out on platforms like YouTube while signaling Bloomberg's unbiased, well-rounded reporting on complex issues.

Process:

Working together with Bloomberg's in-house art director and video producer, I proposed initial visual concepts for the show — centered around honest, authentic map images and artifacts. I put not only my design and animation skills, but also my personal interest in mapping, geopolitics, and info design into practice. As the core visual look is defined, my involvement expands to animation for graphics spots and explainers across 4 episodes, as well as expression-driven AE templates to speed up production.

Results:

China+ ran for 9 total episodes throughout 2021, in total reaching almost 20 million views on YouTube. While my full motion support only covered 4 episodes, the rest of the show was still able to achieve the same level of craft and polish thanks to the comprehensive visual system and graphics toolkit I provided the team with. At the end of the run, Bloomberg continues to feature many online documentary videos about topics in China.
