Datadog Product Tour Video

Motion Graphics

As Datadog has grown from a single product to a full suite of offerings, in 2021, I led the motion design for a short yet compelling animation to showcase everything the product has to offer. Together with a principal designer, we expanded Datadog's visual identity to the first all-encompassing product video for the company. Staying true to our product-first visual approach, we designed the frames to represent our products and features 100% accurately, while using sleek and sophisticated animation techniques to bring the technical aspects to life. This product tour video represented a coming-of-age story for Datadog, bringing its modern solutions to the world in an exciting narrative. A world-class observability platform now has a world-class product marketing asset.

Case Study

Collaboration:

This project was a true cross-functional effort involving me, a principal brand designer, and my managing creative director. I planned frequent check-ins and reviews to make sure product UIs being featured are staying true to the product, and animations look cutting-edge and modern. During this process, I dramatically upleveled my understanding of Datadog’s observability and security product suites, tested numerous product UI animations while staying plugged in with PMMs and engineers to ensure technical details are airtight. The project also involved onboarding and art directing a freelance composer, who created original music and sound effects that captures the essence of Datadog’s products.

TECHNICAL SET-UPS:

We wanted this video to have a long shelf-life and easy to update — knowing our products will be growing rapidly — I made sure to set up the working file and the animation system in a modular, systematic way. Global styles for type treatments and animations were set, speeding up copy/style changes to type animations. This also made it possible to localize the video into 6+ languages in a short time frame after the main video was launched. Essential graphics driven by expressions were set up in After Effects for complex scenes like ones with many logos and arrays of screens, ensuring product UIs can be updated with ease as the product evolves. Since publishing in 2021, the video has seen regular yearly updates, validating the future-proofing thinking.
